A green face, a long nose, wild orange hair and a black pointed hat with a yellow band: Wilma the Witch by The Puppet Company may belong to the monster collection, but she plays a part all of her own. As a witch she gets to say what nobody else says, to threaten and exaggerate and still back down in the end. In a fairy-tale project she stands beside Hansel and Gretel, at Halloween she is the figure of the season, and for a group talking about fear, the witch hand puppet gives them someone who can safely be laughed at.
Wilma is pulled over the forearm and worked on the fold-open principle, which shows off her single pointed tooth. A squeaker sits in her tongue. The puppet is knitted from recycled materials.
The image of the witch with pointed hat, hooked nose and wart owes less to old fairy tales than to print and later to film. The Brothers Grimm barely describe what their witches look like — it was nineteenth-century illustrators who gave them the familiar features. For children the figure remains the most reliable costume there is: hat on, and the part is cast.
Did you know that green witch skin is a Hollywood invention? In the 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz the wicked witch is not green. Only the 1939 film painted her that way, to show off the then-new Technicolor process. The make-up was copper-based and so toxic that the actress could only drink through a straw on set.
