Monster sock hand puppet Bobby with sound - Puppet Company

A green knitted face, a blue fringed mane and, on top, the black hat with its chequered band: Bobby by The Puppet Company is a British policeman in sock form. That sets him apart within the monster collection, because he arrives with a role children grasp immediately — someone who keeps an eye on things and can be told about them. In road safety lessons, in conversations about rules or in scenes about arguments and how to settle them, the sock puppet takes the mediator's part without an adult having to speak for it.

Bobby is pulled over the forearm and worked on the fold-open principle, so he can open wide and answer quickly. A squeaker sits in his tongue and can punctuate every word. The puppet is knitted from recycled materials.

The name is no coincidence: in Britain police officers have been called bobbies for almost two hundred years. It goes back to Sir Robert Peel, who as Home Secretary founded the Metropolitan Police in London in 1829 — and Bobby is the English pet form of Robert. On 29 September 1829 the first thousand officers took up duty on the streets of London.

Did you know there was a second nickname at first? After the founder's surname, officers were also called peelers. That one faded away over time, while bobby has stayed in use to this day.
