Black and white plumage, a sturdy orange and grey beak and a look of mild indignation: the puffin hand puppet from The Puppet Company Puppet Buddies range depicts a seabird most children have never seen — which is exactly why it prompts questions. In projects about the North Sea, the coast and seabirds it is the figure that shows how a bird hunts underwater. Because the wings are worked by hand, it can take off, land and flap indignantly in play.
Head and wings work by hand. The puppet is made from 65 per cent recycled materials.
The Atlantic puffin, Fratercula arctica, belongs to the auk family and breeds on the coasts and islands of the North Atlantic, from Iceland and Norway to Labrador and Maine. Adults measure twenty-eight to thirty-four centimetres. It digs its nesting burrow with its beak, up to a metre and a half into soft ground. Underwater it rows with its wings and dives to depths of seventy metres. Wild birds live to around twenty years.
Did you know that a puffin's colourful beak only glows like that during the breeding season? The red, yellow and grey-blue belong to its breeding plumage and fade afterwards. When fishing it carries several catches home crosswise in its beak — until the whole length of it is full.
