A stage can appear wherever there is a table edge, the arm of a sofa or a car seat. That is all the Sterntaler finger puppet Gretel needs. Her headscarf makes her recognisable at once.
This Gretel is made for the improvised moment: on the way to Granny's, while waiting for dinner or at the kitchen table after tea. With her, a passing idea turns into a little scene in no time, and the child decides how the story carries on.
Did you know that French puppetry has its own Gretel? In the Guignol theatre of Lyon, the woman at the title character's side is called Madelon. Same job on stage, different country, a name of her own.
