Punch and Judy Good Wizard Hand Puppet - munabo ART

The Good Wizard: a Punch and Judy hand puppet from the munabo ART series. The Good Wizard hand puppet wears a tall blue pointed hat scattered with golden stars and a blue robe with a starry panel down the front. White hair, pale eyebrows and a moustache mark him out as a seasoned master of his craft. His soft fabric head is embroidered and shaped by hand, and the face is then artistically hand-painted, so every wizard ends up with a look of his own. The light hand puppet suits children's and adults' hands alike. It is made in a traditional craft workshop in the Czech Republic.

The Good Wizard is the helper Kasper turns to when things look hopeless. If the Evil Wizard has put someone under a spell, the Good Wizard knows the counter-spell. The play gets more exciting when he does not simply give his knowledge away: first Kasper has to solve a riddle, find a herb or do him a favour. That way Kasper does the deed himself, and the wizard only gives him the means. When the two wizards face each other, the play becomes a duel won by whoever casts the stronger spell.

Did you know that in Goethe's ballad The Sorcerer's Apprentice only the old master can end the chaos? While the master is away, the apprentice sets a broom to carry water and cannot remember the word that would stop it. When he splits the broom with an axe, two brooms carry on fetching water. The returning master breaks the spell with a single command. Goethe wrote the ballad in 1797, and the line about the spirits that were called up and will not leave is still proverbial in German today. On the Kasper stage the Good Wizard takes the master's part: he knows how to undo the mischief someone else has caused.
