Monk Seal Hand Puppet - Hansa Creation

For small scenes and animal stories, the monk seal hand puppet by Hansa Creation is easy to use. It fits naturally into puppet theatre, story time and everyday imaginative play. This often leads to new little adventures.

The Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus), with only 815 to 997 surviving individuals, is the rarest seal species in the world. It inhabits the Mediterranean and the West African coast. For centuries it basked on open beaches, but human disturbance has driven it to retreat into sea caves. It feeds on fish, squid and lobster and can reach lengths of up to 300 cm.

Did you know that the monk seal was named after monks? Its brown fur and light belly reminded early naturalists of a monk's habit — and its solitary life in caves reinforced the comparison.
