The meerkat (Suricata suricatta) belongs to the mongoose family and lives in southern Africa. In colonies of up to 30 animals, they share underground burrows. Famous for their upright sentinel pose, they keep watch for birds of prey and snakes. Meerkats are immune to certain scorpion venoms and feed on insects, spiders and small vertebrates.
