The chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) inhabits the rainforests and savannahs of West and Central Africa. It shares 98.7 per cent of its DNA with humans and is our closest living relative. Chimpanzees use over 20 different tools, have individual personalities and can learn sign language. They live in complex social groups of 20 to 150 individuals.
