The brown bear (Ursus arctos) is Europe's largest land predator, inhabiting forests, mountains and tundra across the Northern Hemisphere. As an omnivore, it feeds on berries, roots, insects, fish and occasionally larger prey. In winter, it enters a dormancy during which its heart rate drops to 10 beats per minute. Brown bears can run at speeds up to 56 km/h.
